STYLE | Trends I hated which I am now Investing in

My main goal when I started my blog and having my social media focus on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle was to create a space where people can celebrate their own style. I want to create a community of like-minded women (and men?) who enjoy fashion as much as I do, even though our style philosophies and dress sense may differ. I want to encourage and inspire you to dress like the best version of *YOU*. Trends are an interesting topic in my opinion because on one hand, they give us access to pieces which we can use to further differentiate ourselves from the norm, but on the other hand, they can create a mini subculture and have us all looking the same. I don’t consider myself a “trendy dresser”, I gravitate more to simple and classic silhouettes however, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t taken by and didn’t buy into certain trends. I believe you can incorporate these trends into your looks while still staying true to who you are and how you like to dress, without letting the trend take over your look.

Before we get into the list, I would like to preface this by saying I am a woman, so I’m allowed to change my mind. What I clowned yesterday, I can love today and that’s on periodt! Seriously though, initially I’d roll my eyes when I saw these trends and I may or may not have publicly made fun of them on my social media, but now I already have or I’m looking to add these trends to my wardrobe in 2021. Comment down below and let me know what trends you are looking forward to incorporating into your wardrobe this year.

Dad Sandals

Chanel released a version of the chunky dad sandals on the Spring 2016 runway. Early 2019 was when I first started noticing the ready-to-wear version which came in black quilted leather and the gold button CC logo. I know these aren’t to everyone’s taste but I think they’re absolutely stunning! Women’s sandals are usually dainty, strappy, and super feminine while these err on the masculine, rugged and sporty side.

Chanel has since released the sandals in different colour ways and fabrics for every spring/summer season since the launch, so I think it’s suffice to say that this trend is only on the rise. I purchased a rubber dupe from Country Road and I am still on the market for another pair (hopefully from Chanel). I wore my rubber pair nonstop in the summer and will continue to wear them because they go with just about everything. You can add a bit of edge to an otherwise very feminine and soft look, pair them with jeans and a button-down shirt or wear them with pants and a padded tee like I have in this look. They are so easy and versatile to style.

Cycling Shorts

I’m not too sure why I was so against cycling shorts when they first came out as athleisure wear because in 2020 my leggings were the most worn piece of clothing I own. Cycling shorts are just the summer version of my leggings. This is an option for you if you enjoy wearing denim shorts in the summer. I prefer high-waisted cycling shorts worn with baggy, boxy tops, a button-down shirt, or a crop top and blazer.

Square toe shoes

Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta is responsible for bringing back the square toe shoe. Square toe shoes are the 2019 alternative to pointy toe shoes which were all the rage in the 2010s. I hated these when they first came out. I’m pretty sure I publicly made fun of them on my social media, but I’m eating my words because I’ve recently purchased 3 pairs of sandals with varying degrees of square toes. If you’re looking to get into this trend, but don’t want to go all the way square, there are some rounded versions that aren’t as stark and severe. The Gia Couture x Pernille Teisbaek sandals are a good option to buy into the trend with a wearable square.

Oversized blazers

Gone are the days when the only style of blazers which were in style were fitted blazers made popular by the likes of Balmain. Nowadays we have options for more relaxed and softer style blazers if you feel like the fitted, tailored silhouette is too corporate and serious for your style. I love a good blazer because they are so versatile, but only recently have I started wearing oversized blazers. The bigger and looser fitting the better. I’m usually a size medium in my blazers but recently I’ve been ordering a size or 2 up even in oversized blazers to make sure I got a super loose fit. I’ve also started looking in the men’s section for blazers because men’s blazers seem to be cut and made so much better than womans’. How does one wear this trend you might ask? I prefer an oversized blazer worn over a tight, fitted midi dress, the cycling shorts I mentioned above, or a cute crop top and bottom matching set. Oversized blazers give me permission to dress super sexy without feeling too exposed because the blazer I throw on top will balance the look out.

Chunky trainers

Balenciaga first released the Triple S in 2017. The S in Triple S stands for sole. This trainer has 3 of them. Soles from a running shoe, basketball shoe and track shoe are stacked on top of each other to create the 6cm platform which gives this shoe its unique look and name. Just typing that out sounds ridiculous, but this trainer was a turning point in the world of sneakers and has since become the blueprint of tons of inspired shoes. I have read a few articles saying the era of chunky, dad sneakers are over and we’ll soon be returning to plain, tennis style sneakers which I still adore, and believe there is still space for, but I think it’s premature to believe we’re seeing the end of this trend. If Balenciaga’s Triple S is too bulky or expensive for you, there are tons of more affordable trainers from Adidas to Nike that offer this trend in a more wearable manner.
